Homeworld, hear me
Breathe me in
Whispers in the brine, I know you
Shadowed fin of living matter
Your bones be unscattered
Your bones
HUSH.
HUSH.
NOW LITTLE.
HEART.

Ice Age Gospel

Hush now little heart
See the world was
Set against you
Set against you
Oh she's standing there beneath the falling leaves
All dancing with unbroken grace
Oh they told me all about gravity
But who dares to look fully in her face?
Didn't you see her changing shape?
She's just the dark night reflected in a great wave.
She's just a lonely little dream
Living inside the latest machine
And she longs for the day
When the next one will take her place.
My ruler it stretches out the measures
My canons they battle on the page
My kettle is screaming for a teapot
And my blood, it is ready for a race.
But I can't help it, I'm afraid
I've seen my temple crumble, and my best thoughts
My best thoughts wash away
Just a lonely little dream
Living inside the latest machine
And you long for the day
When the next one will take your place.
Just tell me now how I'm supposed to feel
When I finally get my way
My precious mind can't seem to find
A nice respectable pace.
Didn't you see the news today?
There is no one left to save.

Water on Low Soils
05:10
|

Nightly I walk to a meadow
Where the marrow is gone from the ground.
Where fault lines flicker in the amber
Pillars in their millions surround.
My lips go sounding for a border
And many times comes the mimic of my words:
“Reflection has rounded my corners
Don’t know when I’ll see you return.”
O Carver of trembling hand. We both are waking.
I touch finger to twig and it crumbles
Every fiber has folded inside
A spirit was held in the mineral
All these centuries, waiting for mine.
A bright fog makes bodies of spaces
And my body it darkly bounds.
The droplets all singing from the branches:
“Find the water Follow it down.”

Lizard in the Sun, you have the eye of everyone
Unmoving, then you break into a run.
The camera’s panning slow, heat waves rising from the road
O the black rock river it never runs low.
Now zoom it out wide, show the dried out ravine
And faintly she’s forming, the stealer of scenes.
At first just a glitter of gunmetal grey
A flower of dust, a belly of flame.
Blazing in armor
Still as a temple in ruins
She draws back an arrow
Waits for the moment
Her missile is bitten by scars in the ground
A widening empty, a hush in the crowd
Blazing in armor
Still as a temple in ruins
She turns every page and occasionally
Gives us a view
Our turning is endless
We’ve no memory
And spun to one vision
The faces we meet
We’re bound by a circle
A telescope’s view
A satellite’s mind
A speck in the blue

Angeline
06:45
|
|||
In the town, I make a living setting metals to a mold
But in the evening, the sky turns colors that my eyes can't seem to hold
And so I've come to raise a body that I buried with the war
Sand and ocean -- holy border -- where we landed twenty years before.
All living things will fall apart.
All living things will fall apart.
Twice I thought I'd lost my bearings -- thought the rocks had fallen closed
But in defeat I keep a secret, and she's sleeping there in the cold
Dark as night -- but I can find her, I’ve got her iron inside my heart
And when I feel that steel propeller, then the long-awaited work can start
All living things will fall apart.
All living things will fall apart.
"Angeline -- don't try to whisper.
Let me mend your broken bones.
And when I push you to the water,
You'll be ready to come home.”
Taking off, she leaps and shudders, the air forgetful of her folds
But with the ghosts of all her sisters she cuts the wind with steady blows
All living things will fall apart.
All living things will fall apart.

The Hearing
04:04
|
|||
Well I’m listening for the tune
that the waves make when playing for the moon.
Some nights, they come and crash me down,
Oh, and others it’s the dry sand in which I seem to drown.
I go walking in a line.
If the ocean invades me, I don’t mind.
She don’t gotta give me any sign —
I just need to feel outside myself tonight.
And I’m missing
Though I aim
At describing the hearing of her name
All the notes I have ever written down
They don’t match even a moment of her sound

Parallax Ballad
04:47
|

Hot water turns into coffee, and what I can’t drink I unthinkingly
pour down a hole.
And my voice, it was born of the ocean —
My gills start to die and the dry land it thickens my bones.
The window is beating with raindrops. The old sugar maple by lamplight
is starting to sway.
Oh, the great wind has cut me a canyon —
And many the gullies where once there was nothing could break.
So suddenly down from the sky
Falls my eye.
Something holds me, lets me sing boldly
Oh, for a time.
In the evening, I’m feeling you breathing. The dark of the ceiling with phantoms
is starting to play.
Like stories read to a baby —
It’s most of this music I lose in uncountable ways.
(Sing me the day when my body was soft as the sea.
When the thought of a song was the same as its coming to be.)
So suddenly down from the sky
Falls my eye.
Something holds me, lets me sing boldly
Oh, for a time.

Westward Day
05:56
|
|||
I’m driving past her now –
The dotted yellow line has drawn me south.
The sun lies low on the town –
I know what she will pull from the broken ground… tonight.
You ask me now what I feel –
The riverside has won my sword and shield.
I press my face to the field –
and the gently setting sun to the twisted steel.
Don’t you got lots to say? It’s past your time
To speak your mind.
The lighted domes in shadowed homes are all I see, but I’ve got
One thing to find...
They show it frame by frame –
Each time you hope they won’t run it quite the same.
A smoke trail climbs through the rain –
You wonder what goes first in the dying brain.
Don’t you got lots to say? It’s past your time
To speak your mind.
The lighted domes in shadowed homes are all I see, but I’ve left
One thing behind...
And I found your old room. And I said I’d stay to play one tune. And I saw your beautiful face. And I thought, ‘My god, what’s happened to this place?’
Don’t say, my love,
Hush now little heart
O Carver of trembling hand
that it’s too late, my love,
See the world was
Set against you
We both are waking
Well you know that it’s time to go…
Oh, you ask me now what I’ve found –
I chase the Westward Day at the speed of sound.
You’ve got it turned around –
Prometheus has shrugged, and Atlas is bound.
